Hello. I like Twilight Princess! Very much in fact. So much so that I hate core parts of the game and wish they were different! So that’s what I’ll be doing.
Chapter 1 | Combat
Hooray! My most personally anticipated part. I hate Twilight Princess’ combat. Enemies are too brainless and weak, hidden skills are too situational and mostly useless, and overall there’s not much depth beyond spamming B and the back slice. Combat and enemy AI are two massive individual beasts, but I have some ideas that I think would improve the game significantly.
The changes I’d like to implement are as follows:
- Human Link
- Remove automatic shielding
- Holding R will cause Link to raise his shield
- Enable crouch-shielding (hold R with no target to kneel down)
- Shielding enemy attacks multiple times will build up a “stagger” meter
- If the meter is filled, Link will be knocked back and open to an attack.
- Landing successful hits quickly depletes the meter.
- If no attacks are performed, the meter will begin to slowly decrease on its own after a short delay.
- If magic is implemented, certain hidden skills would utilize it to increase their effectiveness.
- Mortal Draw (maybe)
- Jump Strike
- Great Spin
- Remove automatic shielding
- Wolf Link
- I don’t even want to think about dealing with combat changes for Wolf Link right now…
Changes I am not interested in making:
- Crawling
- There’s no point. TP has no areas that need such a mechanic and implementing it would be pointless bloat to the movement system.
- Crouch stabbing
- I don’t like the idea of introducing turtling to the already way-too-easy combat.
Chapter 2 | Gameplay
Mostly consists of quality-of-life changes and minor feature implementations.
- Shadow Crystal item
- In place of a “quick transform” shortcut, using this item transforms Link without a text-box, consuming magic
- Could keep this in Midna’s interaction menu to restore the “not enough magic” dialogue line, but in my opinion it’s a good middle ground to avoid a textbox and still have some sacrifice from the player (in this case an item slot).
- Or just allow both ways, through Midna and the item…

- New howling songs
- Sun’s song equivalent?
- Enable Midna hints
- Unused text exists for most enemies
- Ghost Lantern
- Allow Link to capture Poe souls as a human, requiring the Ghost Lantern (from TPHD) to see them and capture the soul.
- Can reuse the animation for filling lantern with oil from Chu jelly on the ground
- Allowing Poe to appear in the daytime with the Ghost Lantern would be cool, but would nullify a significant use of a Sun’s Song equivalent for Wolf Link
- Allow Link to capture Poe souls as a human, requiring the Ghost Lantern (from TPHD) to see them and capture the soul.
